Chapter 1: I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre- Algebra Teacher
The first book The Lightning thief is when we first meet Percy and we hear the iconic line “Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood.” He’s a 12 year old kid who is dyslexic and struggles in school and him seeing imaginary creatures and beings causes issues leading him to be expelled from 6 schools. In this book he is currently attending Yancy Academy for Troubled kids on a fieldtrip at the Metropolitan Museum of Art accompanied by Mrs. Dodds his pre-algebra teacher and Mr. Brunner his Latin teacher where he and his best friend Grover meet their first challenge. A prissy red-headed young girl Nancy Bobofit bullies Percy and Grover causing a unexpected altercation ending with her in the fountain Percy insists that he didn’t push her, but Mrs. Dodds demands for him to follow her, bringing him to the back of the Greek and Roman mythology section. She urges him to confess he doesn’t know what she’s talking about, that’s when she reveals her true identity a *Fury. Just as she lunges at him Mr. Brunner appears at the entrance and tosses him a blue ballpoint pen “what Ho, Percy!” when he catches it’s no longer a pen but a bronze sword right when she lunges at him he lets his instincts kick in and he swings the sword, hitting her shoulder turning her into a cloud of yellow dust leaving him alone with a ballpoint pen in his hand. He returns outside as it started to rain believing he imagined it Nancy immediately starts talking to him “I hope Mrs. Kerr whipped your butt.” he is confused “who?” she tells him that’s their teacher. he goes to ask Grover and Grover is just as confused he doesn’t know who Mrs. Dodds is and doesn’t remember her Percy states that this isn’t a funny joke and it’s serious. He then walks over to MR. Brunner “Ah, that would be my pen. Please bring your own writing utensil
in the future, Mr. Jackson.” Percy hands him the pen not remembering he was holding it he askes Mr. Brunner about Mrs. Dodds he replies “Percy, there is no Mrs. Dodds on this trip.
As far as I know, there has never been a Mrs. Dodds at Yancy Academy. Are you feeling all right?”
